The Ice Hotel 30 years celebration

The ice hotel is the most popular tourist attraction in Sweden according to foreign guest. The hotel is located up north of Swede above the polar circle and it is rebuilt every year.

New architects make the hotel different every year and artists make their own contributions of ice magic. This year the ice hotel celebrates 30 years.

Sleeping out on an ice bed and eating three courses on ice plates, wearing long calls in wool. You can do that in Jukkasjärvi.

It’s already crazy cold and lots of snow in Jukkasjärvi. Here, the Icehotel, the art hall and the hotel, is touring for the 30th consecutive year and this year you can take a night in the art suites “A Night at the theater” or “Warm up”.

You can of course get married in the ceremonial hall “Ginkgo” or have a drink in “Torneland”, the icy entertainment area that offers crazy cold drinks.

It is three decades since founder Yngve Bergqvist launched the idea of the ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi. The idea that would lead to one of Sweden’s darkest places in the winter, would be the flash of light for about one million visitors.

“It is a fantastic journey with a lot of joy and pride that has become a reality because we have always had employees who strive to give guests from all over the world a life-enriching moment during their stay. Personally, I think this year’s Icehotel is the best ever and it is the highlight of our anniversary year”, says Yngve Bergqvist in a press release.

This year, 33 artists from 16 countries participated and created the 30th edition of the hotel where you are advised to put on your underwear in wool to stand out.

During the mid-Arctic winter, which lasts December through February, temperatures will drop to -40 degrees in the area 20 miles north of the Arctic Circle. However, in the rooms themselves it is comfortable -5 to -7 degrees.

This is the Ice hotel in numbers:

  • 1,300 ice blocks In spring, 1300 ice blocks are harvested from the Torne River, which is then stored cold until it is time to start building.
  • 10 seconds The total amount of ice used to create the winter section of the hotel corresponds to 10 seconds of water flow in the Torne River.
  • 1,000 ice crystals The crystal chandeliers that adorn the roofs of the hotel carry 1,000 ice crystals sculpted by hand.
  • 110 million ice creams The floor, ceiling and walls of the hotel are fed by the equivalent of 30,000 cubic meters of “snow” (a mixture of snow and ice), which corresponds to 110 million ice creams.
  • 55 cold rooms In the winter open part of the ice hotel, there are 55 cold rooms. For those who are frozen, there is space in Icehotel 365.
