The Irish government and the EU are prepared to offer fresh assurances to Britain on the temporary nature of the backstop in a new document alongside the withdrawal agreement, in an attempt to break the political impasse at Westminster.
Simon Coveney, the tanaiste, has told The Sunday Times: “The EU is looking at ways — and is working with the UK on this — of trying to provide more reassurance on the temporary nature of the backstop. There are ways of providing reassurance to the UK to get a future relationship deal done in a timely manner.”
