Record breaking year for Swedish Customs already

The Swedish Customs’ seizure of drugs has increased during the pandemic despite entry bans and closed borders.

We have seizured more cannabis and more cocaine during these six months than we did throughout 2019, says Charlotte Svensson, head of the Swedish Customs, to Ekot.

The largest increase is in cocaine. The Swedish Customs has seized 130 kilos of cocaine from 15 March to 15 September, compared with 26 kilos during the same period last year.

The Swedish Customs believes that the development is partly due to the fact that the authority has been goven more resources, and partly due to the fact that drug smuggling has moved more to freight transports. Another explanation is the focus on goods transports during the Covid-19 pandemic when blrders have been open for goods but not for people movement.
