Trade is starting to recover

A new UNCTAD article explores how maritime transport data can help governments navigate the uncertain waters of the #COVID19 crisis. By analyzing real-time data on the movement of ships, which carry 90% of goods traded globally, policymakers can gain powerful insight into production and consumption trends.

Shipping data shows that most regions have seen some recovery starting in the third quarter of 2020, both in absolute numbers and compared to 2019 levels.

However, at the global level, port calls were still 3.0% below their 2019 levels in early August. North America and Europe were 16.3% and 13.2% below 2019 port calls, respectively. Southeast Asia had almost reached its previous year’s levels (minus 0.5%), while port calls in China and Hong Kong (China) had already surpassed their 2019 values by more than 4.1%.
